REV. ROB SCHENCK ON THE CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO THE ORLANDO MASS SHOOTING, THE LARGEST IN U.S. HISTORY
A Toolkit for Christian Pastors, Lay Leaders, and Educators to Address to Gun Violence
(June 12, 2016 – Washington, DC) Today was the largest mass shooting in U.S. history in Orlando, FL. Rev. Rob Schenck of Sword of the Spirit, www.SwordoftheSpiritMinistry.org, discusses a Christian response.
“Every shooting is a tragedy and every life lost is of supreme value, yet, this enormous loss of life is understandably overwhelming,” says Rev. Rob Schenck. “We need to pray for the survivors of the killed and for the injured, for a community deeply shaken, and for all of us as we absorb the terrible implications of this terrorist act. Every decent person is shocked, saddened, and will be angered by this extreme violation of the sanctity of life and of the safety and security of our communities and of our country. In the wake of this, we must ask God to help us be at our best when the temptation is to be otherwise. May the One that is Comforter, Counselor, and Mighty God be with us all. In the name of Jesus the Good Shepherd.
CHRISTIAN RESOURCES TO RESPOND TO GUN VIOLENCE
About Rev. Schenck
Rev. Rob Schenck, an evangelical minister to top-level government officials in Washington, DC, president of the National Clergy Council, and past chairman of the Evangelical Church Alliance, is the subject of the newly released documentary, THE ARMOR OF LIGHT, that follows him as he reevaluates his own perspective on guns and how he should best guide the evangelical community to respond to the issue. The film was nominated by the Dove Foundation Crystal Seal award for Best Documentary of 2015 and won the main prize at the Attic Film Festival in 2016.
Since the film’s release, Rev. Schenck has continued to meet with many prominent pastors and Christian leaders throughout the nation. He has observed that many people share his concern or are rethinking their perspective by examining and studying Scripture, including the examples of Jesus as well as his disciples.
As a result, Rev. Schenck launched SwordoftheSpiritMinistry.org to broaden the national conversation on guns and gun violence in America, especially among evangelicals Christians. It is a critical time to look at the often difficult and controversial topic from a Biblical perspective – not a political one.
“We believe the answer to America’s gun culture and gun violence does not come from a secular source or group, but from the Word of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit residing in the hearts of believers. We invite all Christians and Christian leaders to use SwordoftheSpiritMinistry.org to seek out the Lord’s will on this important issue through His Word, prayer, and the fellowship of conversation with other believers and pastors,” states Rev. Schenck.
