NEW EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN WEBSITE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT
ENCOURAGES EVANGELICALS TO LOOK AT
GUN VIOLENCE FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
A Toolkit for Christian Pastors, Lay Leaders, and Educators to Address to Gun Violence
(April 26 – Washington, DC) On April 26th, Rev. Rob Schenck launched a new Christian website, www.SwordoftheSpiritMinistry.org titled, “The Sword of the Spirit: A Christian Conversation on Gun Violence” to provide Evangelical pastors, lay leaders, and educators a place to discuss the issue of gun violence from a Biblical perspective.
“The answer can’t be that ‘I need to buy a gun to protect myself from my neighbor who has a gun,’ and you need to buy a gun to protect yourself from me and my neighbor who have guns,’ says Rev. Schenck. “That’s not the kind of world any of us want to live in. It is certainly not the world in visioned in the Bible when it says, ‘Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.’ (Hebrews 12:14),” he said.
The Sword of the Spirit Website Features Include:
- Pastor’s Toolkit: Statement of Concern on gun violence for pastors to sign, ministering after a shooting resources, scripture resources, and screenings of the documentary THE ARMOR OF LIGHT that follows Rev. Schenck on his journey of faith and firearms
- Weekly Devotionals on the themes related to the causes of gun violence and written by Rev. Schenck as well as Dr. Joel Hunter, Pastor Mike Macintosh, Preston Sprinkle, and Pastor David Woods
- Lay Leader Resources: Essays, sermons, and a forthcoming Bible study guide
- College Toolkit: A forthcoming small group study for Christian college students and seminary students
About Rev. Schenck
Rev. Rob Schenck, an evangelical minister to top-level government officials in Washington, DC, president of the National Clergy Council, and chairman of the Evangelical Church Alliance, is the subject of the newly released documentary, THE ARMOR OF LIGHT, that follows him as he reevaluates his own perspective on guns and how he should best guide the evangelical community to respond to the issue. The film was nominated by the Dove Foundation Crystal Seal award for Best Documentary of 2015 and won the main prize at the Attic Film Festival in 2016.
Since the film’s release, Rev. Schenck has continued to meet with many prominent pastors and Christian leaders throughout the nation. He has observed that many people share his concern or are rethinking their perspective by examining and studying Scripture, including the examples of Jesus as well as his disciples.
As a result, Rev. Schenck launched SwordoftheSpiritMinistry.org to broaden the national conversation on guns and gun violence in America, especially among evangelicals Christians. It is a critical time to look at the often difficult and controversial topic from a Biblical perspective – not a political one.
“We believe the answer to America’s gun culture and gun violence does not come from a secular source or group, but from the Word of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit residing in the hearts of believers. We invite all Christians and Christian leaders to use SwordoftheSpiritMinistry.org to seek out the Lord’s will on this important issue through His Word, prayer, and the fellowship of conversation with other believers and pastors,” states Rev. Schenck.
